A delegation of Iranian parliamentarians has traveled to Geneva, Switzerland, to take part in the 135th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly that is being held from October 24 to 27.

As part of their agenda, the group attended the opening ceremony of the meeting of IPU’s Governing Council on Monday.

Mostafa Kavakebian, a Tehran lawmaker, heads the Iranian delegation, ICANA reported.

On the sidelines of the main event, Hamideh Zarabadi delivered a speech at the Forum of Women Parliamentarians.

Jalil Mokhtar, who represents Abadan in the parliament, also participated in the meeting of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation member states.

MPs from 138 countries have converged on Geneva to determine among other issues ways in which parliaments can respond effectively to serious human rights violations and their underlying causes, including human rights situations likely to lead to conflict. More than 700 lawmakers, including 67 speakers of parliament and 41 deputy speakers, are present in the global parliamentary conference to address the role of parliaments as early responders to human rights abuses.
