Iran's UN envoy explained measures adopted by the Islamic Republic's government to contribute to the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a UN-monitored initiative to address global issues.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran attaches great importance to the effective implementation of the 2030 Agenda at all levels," Gholamali Khoshrou was quoted as saying by Iranian news agencies.

"We welcome the theme of the 71st General Assembly, namely 'The Sustainable Development Goals: A universal push to transform our world'."

Khoshrou was addressing a general debate of the Second Committee of the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday.

"In line with Iran's strategic approach to sustainable development, a committee has been assigned by the government to determine and monitor the responsibility of various ministries and organizations for the implementation of SDGs," he said.

"Such major issues as poverty eradication, sustainable management of water and sanitation, the use of renewable energy resources and energy efficiency improvement have figured high on the government's agenda."  The envoy said specific policies have been outlined and issued to national institutions for protecting the environment and promoting a resilient national economy.

"Furthermore, [Iran's] sixth national development plan addresses the implementation of the Agenda 2030 at the national level … The Islamic Republic of Iran also plans to host an international conference on combating sand and dust storms in line with the 2030 Agenda. It is also our intention to ratify the Paris Agreement in 2017 [an international pact to curb climate change]," he said.

  Severe Challenges

The Iranian envoy highlighted challenges facing the implementation of the plan at the regional level. Khoshrou said there exist severe challenges to the implementation of the Agenda 2030 in the region.

"It is struggling against poverty, land degradation, desertification, water scarcity, hot climate conditions and continued extensive drought, while plagued by a scourge of terrorism and extremist violence," he said.

"The Sustainable Development Goals demand an integrated and coherent response from the UN system. It should play a critical, effective coordinating role in strengthening global cooperation to promote sustainable development."

The 2030 Agenda forms the new global development framework anchored around 17 SDGs with a total of 169 targets, including economic, social development and environmental protection issues.
