President Hassan Rouhani said the most urgent priority in Syria's conflict is providing people with humanitarian assistance.

He made the statement in a meeting with Syrian Parliament Speaker Hadiya Khalaf Abbas in Tehran on Tuesday, IRNA reported.

The president said the interference of outside powers and spread of terrorism are the main reasons behind the chaotic situation in West Asia.

Rouhani praised the resistance of Syrian people against terrorist groups that "feel no moral and humanitarian compunctions", adding that Iran will continue to support Syria in its fight against terrorism to promote regional security.

The president hoped that the government and opposition groups "committed to Syria's independence and [respect] the will of the Syrian nationals" would soon reach an agreement to end the conflict in the Arab country.

Khalaf Abbas hailed Iran for standing beside the Syrian nation against terrorism, saying Damascus would like to expand relations with Tehran.

The first female Syrian parliament speaker said the Syrian people are the only ones to decide about the future of Syria, adding that if major powers like the US want to help the Syrian nation, they should stop terrorist groups whose expansion also poses a threat to the world.

She arrived in Tehran on Monday for an official visit at the invitation of her Iranian counterpart, Ali Larijani.

On the same day, Khalaf Abbas met Larijani and a foreign policy advisor to the Leader, Ali Akbar Velayati. On Tuesday, she also met Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani.

Since March 2011, Syria has been the scene of a standoff between the Syrian Army and foreign-backed militants fighting to topple the government. Iran provides the Syrian Army with advisory services.
