In a series of meetings with Iranian officials, United Nations Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O’Brien discussed collaboration in distributing humanitarian aid to civilians trapped in Middle East conflict zones, especially in Syria and Iraq. The most recent meeting was with Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari, in which O’Brien called for Iran’s close cooperation with the UN effort, particularly in some areas in Syria, Fars News Agency reported. The official visit comes at a time when several countries in the Middle East are gripped by deadly conflicts with many of their citizens in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Upon arrival in Iran on Sunday, O’Brien separately met with Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli and Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior foreign policy advisor to the Leader of Islamic Revolution.  According to a recent report by ReliefWeb, a news portal administered by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, O’Brien’s trip to Tehran could be an opportunity to draw attention to Iran’s considerable experience and expertise in disaster management and humanitarian response.
