A lawmaker said the implementation of a recent decision by Iran, Russia and Azerbaijani to launch the project of International North–South Transport Corridor will help boost regional economy and security.

Mohammad Javad Abtahi also told ICANA on Tuesday that the project will be a milestone in efforts to enhance regional economic cooperation.

“The transport corridor has the potential of significantly developing the regional economies and increasing their ability to export goods,” he said.

Abtahi said the trade route will also prevent security threats.

“Another positive impact of the corridor is that it will boost regional security, as closer interaction among regional states would help improve our security,” he said.

INSTC is a planned ship, rail and road route for moving freight among India, Russia, Iran, Europe and Central Asia.

President Hassan Rouhani and his Russian and Azeri counterparts, Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev respectively, agreed to strengthen transport connections in a one-day trilateral summit in the Azeri capital Baku last week.

The project, which has been discussed since 2008, is expected to get a major push after the three countries’ presidents discussed it for the first time.
