An Interior Ministry official said hopefuls are scheduled to sign up next April to contest the 2017 presidential election.

"According to the timetable for the 12th presidential election, candidates will be registered on April 11-15," ISNA quoted the head of Election Headquarters, Mohammad Hossein Moqimi, as saying on Thursday.

Moqimi said the candidates, after going through the vetting process of the Guardians Council, can orchestrate their campaigns from April 28 to May 17.

According to the law, the Interior Ministry is in charge of conducting elections and the Guardians Council is tasked with supervising polls and vetting the candidates.

The Interior Ministry's spokesperson announced late last month that the next presidential vote will be held in May.

Salman Samani said the Guardians Council had agreed to the ministry's proposal to hold the polls on May 19.

Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said in March that the ministry would start preparations for the 2017 presidential vote in late September or early October.

Hassan Rouhani won Iran's last presidential race in 2013, when he secured just over 50% of the vote and narrowly avoided the need for a runoff. The tenure of his administration, the 11th of its kind since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, will end in July 2017.

Iranian presidents are elected to a four-year tenure restricted to eight consecutive years.
