Russia Releases 2 Iranian Prisoners

Russia on Sunday released two Iranian prisoners ahead of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rouhani, in Baku, Iran's ambassador in Moscow announced. According to Mehdi Sanaei, the two Iranians had been arrested in Russia about three years ago and were sentenced to 12 and 14 years in prison, Tasnim News Agency reported. The envoy said diplomatic efforts had been underway over the past two years to secure their release. "Now Russia has agreed to set them free on the day the two presidents are going to meet," he said. The presidents of Iran, Russia and the Republic of Azerbaijan are in Baku to attend a trilateral summit for talks on a range of issues, including cooperation in commerce, energy, telecommunications, environmental issues, fight against terrorism, transportation and transit of goods.
