Iran and Afghanistan held a new round of bilateral political consultations at the level of deputy foreign ministers.

The meeting was held in Tehran between Deputy Foreign Minister for Asian and Pacific Affairs Ebrahim Rahimpour and Afghanistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Hekmat Khalil Karzai, Tasnim News Agency reported on Thursday.

The two diplomats discussed ways of promoting cooperation between Tehran and Kabul in political, security, military, economic and cultural fields as well as in the fight against terrorism and narcotics.

They weighed plans to boost bilateral trade ties, implement a trilateral agreement on transportation involving Iran, Afghanistan and India, complete a railroad linking Iran’s Khaf to Afghanistan’s Herat, promote regional and international cooperation and work on educational programs.

Back in May, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani traveled to Iran to sign a trilateral agreement linking Iran, Afghanistan and India on the establishment of an international transit corridor via the Iranian port city of Chabahar.
