A French diplomat has called Iran a major stakeholder in the region.

In a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Tehran, Jean-Francois Girault, the French foreign ministry's director for North Africa and the Middle East affairs, said, "Iran is a major stakeholder in regional issues," ISNA reported on Friday   .

He also called for enhanced bilateral cooperation to help find solutions to regional challenges.

The two officials discussed the latest developments in the Middle East region, the situation in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon as well as the fight against terrorism and extremism.

He touched on the "historical influence" of the two countries in Lebanon and said, "The two states attach great importance to the stability, security, and national sovereignty of Lebanon; and more efforts are needed to reinforce such issues."

Amir-Abdollahian, for his part, described regional developments, particularly the issues related to stability and security in the region, as closely interrelated. He stated, "Tehran strongly supports Lebanon, Syria and Iraq and the countries affected by the threat of terrorism" and backs efforts aimed at achieving political solutions to regional crises.

Iran is opposed to any foreign intervention in the region, he added.
