The Interior Ministry’s spokesperson announced on Wednesday that the next presidential election will be held on May 19.

Salman Samani also told IRNA on Wednesday that the Guardians Council agreed to the ministry’s proposal to hold the presidential poll on May 19.

The council is a 12-member body tasked with supervising elections and vetting hopefuls, while the Interior Ministry is in charge of conducting the elections.

Earlier, Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said the ministry will start preparations for the 2017 presidential vote in early fall. The executive phase of the 2017 presidential election will be kicked off in late September or early October, he said in March.

President Hassan Rouhani won Iran’s presidential race in 2013, securing just over 50% of the vote and avoided the need for a runoff. Iranian presidents are elected to a four-year term and the term limit for a chief executive is eight years in office.
