United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hailed Iran's full commitment to its nuclear deal with major powers.
"I commend the Islamic Republic of Iran for implementing its nuclear-related commitments, as verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency," Ban said in a statement on Wednesday, which marked the first anniversary of the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 to endorse the July 14, 2015 pact.
In return for accepting time-bound constraints on its nuclear program, Iran received relief from international sanctions when the accord, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, became effective in January.
"The JCPOA was a triumph of diplomacy for the resolution and prevention of conflict and which also strengthened global non-proliferation norms. I applaud the dedication and determination shown on all sides," he said, according to a transcript of the statement carried by the UN website.
Ban urged all parties to the deal to uphold their commitments and member states to support its full and effective implementation.
"It is of the utmost importance that the JCPOA works for all its participants, including by delivering tangible benefits to the Iranian people," he said.
"One year on, I remain certain that the JCPOA is the best way to ensure the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program and to realize the great aspirations of the Iranian people. I call for the JCPOA and Resolution 2231 to be implemented in a comprehensive manner, based on mutual respect and mutual benefit, and which would facilitate greater cooperation to achieve international peace and security."
Iran has always denied its nuclear program may have had military purposes, saying it is only for peaceful applications.
