Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said the Iranian government will continue to assist Iraq and Syria in their battles against terrorist groups.

Shamkhani made the statement in a meeting with Ammar al-Hakim, an influential Iraqi politician.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran will continue to provide Iraqi and Syrian governments with advisory services until terrorist groups are rooted out of the region," IRNA quoted Shamkhani as saying in Tehran on Sunday.

Praising the Iraqi Army and popular forces for their recent achievements in the fight against terrorist elements, Shamkhani said Iraq's domestic capacities show that it can win the fight against terrorism and totally eliminate the self-styled Islamic State militant group.

Hakim, chairman of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, hoped that with the vigilance of the Iraqi people, government and religious authorities, the country would foil foreign-instigated plots to provoke division among Iraqi parties and focus on the campaign against terrorism.

The senior Iraqi cleric also held a separate meeting with Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on the same day, in which the two sides discussed the latest political and security developments in Iraq.
