Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has made significant changes in the diplomat corps under his watch.

According to a Foreign Ministry press release on Sunday, he appointed Bahram Qasemi as new spokesman and head of the Center for Public and Media Diplomacy.

Qasemi has served as ambassador to Ireland, Italy and Spain, head of the second bureau of the political department, head of the first bureau of Commonwealth states and as director general for Western Europe.

He replaces Hossein Jaberi Ansari, who assumed the post on October 28, 2015.

Jaberi Ansari, a former ambassador to Lebanon and Libya and director general for the Middle East and North Africa, has been appointed as deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs.

Before Jaberi Ansari, Marzieh Afkham was in the position of spokesperson since September 2013, following the election victory of President Hassan Rouhani.

Afkham later moved to Malaysia to become Iran's first female ambassador after the 1979Islamic Revolution.

The former deputy for Arab and African affairs, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, will now function as advisor to the foreign minister.
