President Hassan Rouhani expressed Iran’s readiness for closer cooperation with Qatar to contribute to regional stability and security.

“Tehran is willing to expand consultations with friendly countries in the region, including Qatar, for strengthening regional stability and security,” Rouhani said in a telephone talk with the emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Wednesday, Tasnim News Agency reported.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran and Qatar have common interests and concerns, and can achieve their goals, which are in line with regional developments and stability, through closer collaboration.”

The president stressed the need for “strategic talks” between Iran and other regional states.

Rouhani, who was inaugurated in August 2013, has repeatedly voiced Tehran’s resolve to forge normal ties to neighboring countries.

The Qatari emir said his country is “proud” of its amicable ties with Iran, and hoped for the enhancement of two-way relations.

Highlighting Iran’s crucial role in the region, Sheikh Tamim said Doha wants “good and strategic relations” between Iran and Persian Gulf Arab states.
