The Foreign Ministry spokesman denounced the deadly car bomb attack by the so-called Islamic State Tuesday in Iraq’s holy city of Karbala as a terrorist act.

Hossein Jaberi Ansari said countering the threat posed by terrorism and extremism demands cohesion and national unity of the Iraqi people and effective support from the international community, Press TV reported.

He extended his condolences to the Iraqi government, people and the families of the victims of the attack.

At least five people were killed and 11 others were wounded after a car bomb exploded in central Karbala, 80 kilometers southwest of Baghdad, near the house of Karbala Governor Aqil al-Turaihi.

Iraqi sources said the bombing occurred five kilometers away from the shrines of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein, and his brother Hazrat Abbas.

In a statement later in the day, the so-called Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the attack. The terrorist group has been spreading death and destruction in  Iraq’s northern and western regions since June 2014.

Also known and Daesh and ISIS, the mediaeval militia has also killed thousands of innocent civilians, namely women and children, in war-torn Syria over the past four years.
