An official at the Foreign Ministry denied reports that Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif had received a secret letter from European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

Speaking to Tasnim News Agency on Sunday, the unnamed official made it clear that no such letter exists.

It came after rumors were spreads that Mogherini had sent Zarif a secret letter, saying the P5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) has upheld all of its commitments under the July 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, and that the outstanding problems in financial and banking ties with Tehran have nothing to do with their commitments under the accord.

Although the nuclear agreement between Iran and the six major powers has come into effect since January, Iranian officials have often complained about the US failure plus indifference to fully implement the accord.

In an interview with Tasnim News Agency in April, Mogherini said the EU has been holding talks with the US to remove the obstacles in the way of banks wanting to do business with Iran after implementation of the historic nuclear deal.
