Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei singled out the priority issues that should top the agenda of the newly-elected parliament.

In a meeting with members of the parliament on Sunday, Ayatollah Khamenei highlighted the parliament’s important role in the system.

“The crucial duty of Majlis is to help lay the rail tracks needed to facilitate the government’s movement through legislation,” he said.

The Leader noted that the assembly’s supervisory role is not in conflict with its cooperation with the government, stressing that such a cooperation does not mean the Majlis should ignore its monitoring responsibility.

“Lawmakers should use their legal authority, including through research and investigation, to ensure the rule of law is upheld,” the Leader was quoted as saying by his official website.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the parliament needs to concentrate on the establishment and enforcement of Resistance Economy, a series of policies proposed by him for cutting dependence on oil revenues by spurring growth in domestic production.

“Legislators can play an influential role in the implementation of Resistance Economy because they can ensure that the government’s economic steps are aligned with the path to Resistance Economy. They should demand this from the government,” he said.

“The campaign against smuggling is also expected to be assigned priority in the assembly. Smuggling, whose elimination is a formidable challenge, is like stabbing the system in the back. The government should fight this evil phenomenon and Majlis should support the government’s fight.”

Officials, including Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani and President Hassan Rouhani, have recently warned about the vast organized smuggling of contraband that has severely crippled domestic production.

Referring to cultural issues as another domain demanding special attention, the Leader said, “While the issue of economy is at the moment an urgent national priority, in the long run culture outweighs economy.”
