President Hassan Rouhani said encouraging private sectors of Iran and Ukraine to work with each other is essential to promoting bilateral relations.

In a meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin in Tehran on Sunday, Rouhani said removing obstacles to banking cooperation will pave the way for broader economic cooperation, IRNA reported.

He named energy and transport as two potential areas for fostering collaboration between the two countries.

"Ties can also be expended in cultural, scientific, technological and tourism fields," he said.

Rouhani also touched on disputes between Ukraine and Russia, saying dialogue is the only way to settle differences and ensure lasting security.

Relations between Ukraine and Russia have been in tatters since the Crimean Peninsula was annexed to Russia following a referendum in March 2014.

Klimkin said Kiev looks forward to having deep bonds with the Islamic Republic.

"We look for cooperative relations in all domains, including economy, agriculture and energy," he said.

The top Ukrainian diplomat also called for wider tourism and cultural cooperation, saying it will help the two people better know each other.

On the same day, Klimkin met his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, to discuss bilateral relations and international developments.

In the meeting, Zarif said he is optimistic that the two-day trip of the high-ranking economic delegation headed by Klimkin to Iran will help develop commercial and industrial cooperation between the two sides.

Zarif said Tehran and Kiev can engage in the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime.
