Defense Ministry Launches New Arms Plant

The Defense Ministry on Monday opened a new industrial plant that produces advanced personal weapons, air defense arms and munitions.

Defense Minister Lieutenant General Hossein Dehqan inaugurated the new plant on Monday, which marked the anniversary of the liberation of Khorramshahr, a city in southwestern Iran that had been occupied by the Iraqi Army during the 1980-88 Iraq-imposed war.

The newly-launched factory manufactures advanced personal weapons, shoulder-fired missiles for air defense as well as ammunition and other products, Tasnim News Agency reported.

Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment and military gear, making the armed forces largely self-sufficient in the arms sphere.

Tehran has always assured that its military capabilities pose no threat to regional countries, saying that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.
