If terrorist groups gain control of Syria, their next main target will be Iraq, the head of the Expediency Council’s Center for Strategic Research warned.

In a Wednesday meeting with a group of Iraqi clerics and scholars in Tehran, Ali Akbar Velayati stressed that both Iran and Iraq should show sensitivity toward developments in Syria, because the defeat of Syria will embolden terrorists to take on Iraq, Tasnim News Agency reported.

He explained that enemies of the “axis of resistance” seek to redefine borders in the Middle East, including plots to ruin the national identity of Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine, and disrupt unity in those nations, like what they inflicted on Libya.

Syria has been gripped by a civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group, currently controlling parts of it.

Iraq has also been grappling with the threat of IS terrorists who invaded the country in summer 2014.
