Expansion of mutual ties between Iran and Russia in all areas, particularly in military and defense, will help establish peace and stability in the region, said a member of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission.

Referring to talks being held between Tehran and Moscow to fulfill Iran's naval needs by Russia, Ebrahim Aqa-Mohammadi said, "In the past, relations between Iran and Russia were more focused on tactical and political interactions. But now the two countries pursue strategic ties that demand expansion of mutual interactions in the areas of economy, trade, politics, culture and defense."

Aqa-Mohammadi also told ICANA on Tuesday that due to the proximity of Iran and Russia, and considering the deployment of Russian forces across the region, military interactions between the two countries will surely yield positive results. Calling current interactions valuable and worthy of further enhancement, the legislator said the two countries play significant roles in both regional and global equations.

"In the present situation, Iran and Russia are among leading players in regional developments, including Syria's war," he said.

"Iran has made remarkable progress in weaponry, including missiles. Today, the country only requires strategic weapons such as missile defense systems. The S-300 missile system has been among such requirements we purchased from Russia."

Deputy Navy Commander Rear Admiral Gholamreza Bigham said on Sunday the navy has officially informed Russia of its demand for certain naval equipment, particularly for marine rescue and relief.
