Following the Assembly of Experts’ elections held across Iran back in February, the high-ranking body will elect a new chairman later this month.

Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami, a member of the assembly who was reelected in the February votes, told Tasnim News Agency on Thursday that the first official session of the Fifth Assembly of Experts will be held on May 24.

He added that during the session, the new chairman and members of the presiding board will be elected. The Assembly of Experts elects and oversees the activities of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution. Members of the assembly are directly elected to office by people for an eight-year term.

Countrywide assembly elections as well as parliamentary polls were held in Iran simultaneously on February 26. Over 160 candidates ran for the 88-seat assembly.

More than 60% of about 55 million eligible voters cast their ballots at around 53,000 polling stations across the country on the elections day.
