The navy is working on a series of new military hardware, including a submarine and a destroyer that enjoy state-of-the-art technology, a top commander said.

In an interview with Tasnim News Agency on Monday, Deputy Navy Commander Rear Admiral Gholamreza Bigham said the homegrown submarine, dubbed Fateh (Conqueror), has been launched and is undergoing various types of tests before coming on stream.

The 527-ton Fateh is said to be highly mobile with the capability to cruise fast and far in deep waters. It is also capable of firing torpedoes and laying mines.

The indigenous submarine is known as a medium undersurface vessel whose weight at depth increases to 593 tons. It is equipped with advanced sonic radar systems for identifying enemy vessels.

Admiral Bigham pointed to the indigenous Sahand destroyer and said the vessel is almost 80% complete.

“The navy will install the latest equipment on Sahand,” he added.

According to the commander, the navy has also equipped its helicopters with variable-depth sonar systems, making them suitable for detecting submarines.
