Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei underscored the important role of the police in safeguarding national security, declaring it as central to creating a self-sufficient economy.

"Without security, people's daily lives and their scientific, academic and economic activities and the running of the country would not be possible," Ayatollah Khamenei was quoted as saying by IRNA.

Speaking in a meeting with police commanders and personnel on Sunday, the Leader said, "Acting within the framework of the Resistance Economy and creating a self-developing economy depend on domestic security."

Ayatollah Khamenei has named the current Iranian year, which began on March 20, "Year of Resistance Economy, Action and Implementation."

Resistance Economy is a set of policies outlined by the Leader to bolster the domestic economy and wean it off oil revenues.

He stressed the need to identify the root causes of insecurity and to use expert help to address them effectively.

"Drug addiction, crimes and violation of norms pose a threat to people's lives and health, as well as public morality. Thoughtful planning is required to address such issues by consulting experts in relevant fields, particularly those in the police force," he said.

The Leader said it is essential that the police project a "strong" yet friendly image.

"Police should portray themselves publically as a kind and strong friend," he said.

Ayatollah Khamenei noted that decisive and prompt action, efficient internal organization, treating people with compassion and adhering to the rule of law are factors contributing to the positive image of the police.
