Head of the Center for Strategic Research of the Expediency Council, Ali Akbar Velayati, described the US move to seize the Central Bank of Iran’s assets as “international theft”, stressing that Tehran will push hard to get its money back.

Speaking to reporters in Tehran on Tuesday, Velayati stressed that Iran will insist on having its money back in the same way that it could restore its nuclear rights after years of struggle, Tasnim News Agency reported.

Last week, the US Supreme Court upheld a ruling that allows the families of US Marines killed in the 1983 bombing of their barracks in Beirut and victims of other attacks that US courts have linked to Iran to seize some $2 billion in assets held in New York’s Citibank belonging to the Central Bank of Iran, which were blocked under US sanctions.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told the New Yorker in an interview published on Monday that the recent US court rulings against Iran will put an end to the “credibility of the US justice system”.
