President Hassan Rouhani said fighting terrorism and terrorist groups such as the so-called Islamic State is an important duty of all “responsible” governments in the region and the world. Rouhani made the statement in a phone conversation with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on Wednesday, Press TV reported. “Although some countries pretend to be combating terrorism, unfortunately they are strengthening it through military aid to Daesh [an Arabic acronym for IS] and buying oil from it,” he said. “The Islamic Republic considers stability and security of Iraq as its own stability and security, and will make efforts to enhance it.” Rouhani said Tehran will support the Iraqi government and nation in their fight against terrorism and will not refrain from extending any help in this regard. The Iraqi premier briefed Rouhani on the latest political and security developments in his country. Abadi described IS as a threat to the region and the world, saying that promotion of cooperation against IS benefits both the region and the world.
