The Indian foreign minister expressed her country's readiness to help build on bilateral relations and explore fresh areas of cooperation.

"We are ready to discuss new outlooks and grounds for cooperation within the framework of … the previous bilateral relations in the fields of politics, economy, culture, art and science," Sushma Swaraj also said in a meeting with her Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tehran on Sunday.

"New Delhi is keen on boosting defense and security cooperation with Tehran," Swaraj said, according to a press release of Iran's Foreign Ministry.

Zarif welcomed expansion of bilateral defense and security cooperation, saying it would benefit the two sides' relations and regional peace and security.

He hoped that Swaraj's trip would help expedite the process of releasing Iranians jailed in India.

"In view of shared cultural and spiritual similarities between the Islamic Republic of Iran and India, there is great scope for the deepening and expansion of cultural exchanges and holding of cultural events involving promotion of handicrafts, tourism and Persian language," he said.

Zarif noted that easing visa requirements for mutual visits by the two countries' businessmen and officials could give a significant boost to bilateral trade.

Discussions on international and regional issues, including the latest developments in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, were among the issues on the meeting's agenda.
