A senior spokesman for the Iranian Armed Forces said on Sunday the United States is concerned about Iran’s increasing missile power and tries to use it as a pretext to undermine the Iranian establishment.

Asked about the reason behind Washington’s excessive focus on Iran’s missile program, Lieutenant General Massoud Jazayeri said, “One reason is that Americans are extremely worried Iran would achieve capabilities higher than what it has today.”

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a ceremony in Tehran, he added that Americans are trying to advance their policies in the region by undermining Iran’s capabilities, Tasnim News Agency reported.

“Every now and then, Washington tries to find pretexts to question the Iranian establishment,” Jazayeri said, pointing to Iran’s nuclear energy program, missile program or even the human rights issue as some of the pretexts used by the US for achieving its objectives. Earlier in the day, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani underlined that although certain western states do not want the Islamic Republic to be powerful enough to ensure the security of Middle East, Tehran should develop its military might, particularly its missile capabilities.
