A lawmaker said Germany is able to act as a mediator between Iran and Saudi Arabia, following the Saudi decision to cut relations in January after attacks by Iranian protesters on Saudi diplomatic premises over the execution of a prominent Shia cleric by the Arab kingdom. Avaz Heydarpour, a member of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, made the statement in an interview with ICANA on Saturday in reference to a visit by German Frank-Walter Steinmeier to the UAE scheduled on Sunday with the aim of helping defuse tensions between Tehran and Riyadh. “Frequent visits by German officials to the Middle East have placed the country in a position to play a role in promoting stability in the region through political means,” the lawmaker said. Heydarpour noted that mediation by a third party between two opposing countries that have hostile relations is an option that could be effective. “In view of the fact that Berlin is a political and economic partner to both the Islamic Republic and Saudi Arabia, it could make a good mediator,” he said.
