European Union foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, on Saturday hailed the parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections held across Iran on Friday, and wished the best for the Iranian nation.

“Following #IranElections2016, wishing all Iranians the best for the future of their country,” Mogherini wrote on her Twitter account, according to Tasnim News Agency.

Polling stations opened on Friday morning and were scheduled to close after 10 hours. But the higher-than-expected turnout in the elections was enough to convince the Interior Ministry to extend the voting time several times.

Some 55 million Iranians were eligible to cast their ballots in around 53,000 polling stations across the country.

The Interior Ministry spokesman said on Saturday morning that early results showed more than 33 million people had voted in the elections.

About 5,000 hopefuls ran for the parliament and 159 candidates for the assembly, a clerical body with the power to elect and supervise the performance of the Leader of Islamic Revolution.

There are 290 seats in the Iranian Parliament and 88 in the assembly.
