An official with the Russian Foreign Ministry says the top Russian diplomat will likely visit Tehran in the coming months.

“Sergey Lavrov has an invitation and might visit Iran. However, the exact time of his visit is not known yet,” ISNA on Tuesday quoted Zamir Kabulov, director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department on Asia, as saying.

The significance of Iran-Russia relations in the current regional status lies in several underlying reasons. An Iranian lawmaker and a deputy chairman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission elaborated on such reasons.

“Given the terrorist threats in the region and the mischievous measures of some countries, regular consultations between Iran and Russia on regional issues, including the critical conditions in Syria and Iraq, are necessary,” Mansour Haqiqatpour told ICANA.

In line with efforts to boost the two countries’ cooperation in the field of defense and military technologies, Defense Minister Hossein Dehqan traveled to Moscow on Monday.

Haqiqatpour highlighted the importance of the visit, and also Russia’s role in the course of Iran’s nuclear negotiations with major powers.
