A senior security official said reinforcing the defensive capabilities of Gazans against the criminal regime of Israel is high on Iran's agenda.

Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani made the statement in a meeting with a delegation from Palestine's resistance groups in Tehran on Sunday, IRNA reported.

Praising the steadfast efforts of resistance fighters in the face of the brutal aggressions of the Zionist regime of Israel, Shamkhani said the admirable victories of resistance forces are the result of their commitment to the Palestinian cause of freedom.

Shamkhani said Iran would also continue to provide thousands of poor people in Gaza with food and medical aid. The Gaza Strip has been under an Israeli siege since June 2007. The siege has caused a decline in the standards of living as well as unprecedented levels of unemployment and unrelenting poverty among 1.8 million people living there.

Shamkhani also touched upon efforts for rebuilding the war-torn strip, describing Gaza's reconstruction as another issue that Iran has placed on top of its agenda, while denouncing foreign states that have failed to fulfill their promises to help, which impeded reconstruction efforts.

"Palestinians should know their real friends," he said. "The result of making mistake in separating friends from foes would be siding with those who are secret allies of Israel and never care about the destiny of the Muslim world and Palestinians."

In early July 2014, the Zionist regime waged a 50-day offensive against the Gaza Strip. Nearly 2,200 Palestinians, including 577 children, were killed in Israel’s onslaught and over 11,100 others were injured.

Over 100,000 homes were destroyed or damaged during the conflict, with thousands of other structures, including 24 schools, razed to the ground, compounding the effects of the blockade and two other Israeli military offensives since 2008, with damage from those conflicts barely addressed.

On Sunday, the delegation also met Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani who said fostering unity among Muslim countries is essential for Palestinian resistance against Israeli oppression to bear fruit.
