Ambassador to Kabul Mohammad Reza Bahrami renewed his country’s support for the Afghan government and its readiness to contribute to national consensus and unity in Afghanistan.

“Iran believes in continuing support for the government of national unity,” Bahrami said in the Afghan capital on Friday, Fars News Agency reported.

The ambassador reiterated that new threats such as extremism are one of the main concerns in the region and Iran is ready to help advance Afghan peace talks.

“Iran also expects the international community to help the government establish peace and security in Afghanistan,” he said.

In a related development last month, high-raking Iranian and Afghan officials conferred in Tehran on drawing a roadmap for the development of bilateral relations. The issue was raised in a meeting between Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Afghanistan’s Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah in Tehran.

In the meeting, the two officials discussed the latest developments in bilateral relations and the region, and underlined the need for having more effective cooperation in the fight against terrorism and extremism.
