Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif called for increased cooperation between the regional countries to fight against terrorist groups, including the so-called Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria.
He made the remarks in a meeting with the new Turkish ambassador to Tehran, Reza Hakan Tekin, on Sunday, in which the ambassador submitted a copy of his credentials to the foreign minister.
Zarif described the ties between Iran and Turkey as "good" and expressed hope that bilateral relations would be expanded in all spheres.
He touched on the complicated circumstances in the region and called on the regional states to cooperate in the battle against terrorists.
The official added, "The regional countries are currently facing a number of challenges which could be overcome just through cooperation and consultations."
The new Turkish ambassador, for his part, said, "There are plenty of grounds for promotion of cooperation between the two states."
Tekin also referred to the threat of terrorist groups operating in the region, especially the IS, and said, "The terrorist group is considered a threat to his country's national interests; and Turkey has suffered a lot from this group."
