Chairman of the Guardians Council Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati on Saturday rejected the resignation submitted by the council's spokesperson earlier in the day, Fars News Agency reported.

Nejatollah Ebrahimian had not provided any reason for his decision to step down.

The Guardians Council, a top-level body comprised of jurists and legal experts, is tasked with determining whether the bills passed by Parliament are in compliance with Sharia (Islamic law) and the Constitution and vetting candidates for elections.

The Election Oversight Board, which works under the council's supervision, was expected to release on the same day the list of the candidates for the Feb. 26 parliamentary election whose qualifications have not been approved.
