Senior Iranian and Russian diplomats exchanged views about the effects of severance of relations between the Islamic Republic and Saudi Arabia on the ongoing crisis in Syria. Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic relations with Iran on January 3, following the attacks on Saudi Embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad by some people during protests against the Saudi regime over Riyadh’s execution of top Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr. In a Tuesday phone conversation, Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his Russian counterpart Mikhail Bogdanov discussed the latest developments in Syria, including efforts by UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura for the resumption of intra-Syrian talks, Press TV reported. Amir-Abdollahian and Bogdanov also reviewed the latest developments in Yemen and the continuation of Saudi military campaign.
