A high-ranking diplomat said all regional states are responsible for maintaining peace and avoiding tensions in the region. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Morteza Sarmadi made the statement in a meeting with First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sabah al-Khalid Al Sabah on Thursday, Fars News Agency reported. Sarmadi described terrorism and extremism as the main issues facing the region and regretted that certain countries are using terror groups as a means to advance their agenda. The deputy minister referred to Saudi Arabia’s recent execution of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, a “religious and freedom-seeking figure”, as an act of desperation that has fueled tensions in the region. Sarmadi also said Iran rejects the Sunday attack on Saudi Embassy in Tehran by furious demonstrators in protest to the Saudi execution and it seeks to deal with attackers. Although Iranian officials criticized the incident and police arrested several individuals involved in the attack, Saudi Arabia on Sunday severed diplomatic ties with Iran.
