Syria would continue to receive Iranian support for their fight against terror groups whose hands are stained with the blood of oppressed people, a senior diplomat said.

In a meeting with visiting Syrian Grand Mufti Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun on Thursday, Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said extremism and terrorism pose a dire threat to the Middle East and the world.

“Iran’s policy of getting behind the Syrian government, defending its [national] sovereignty and territorial integrity and respecting the will of Arab nation has not changed,” IRNA quoted the deputy minister as saying.

Amir-Abdollahian said Syria is at the forefront of the global fight against terrorism, while five years have passed since the Syrian people, along with the government, began resisting against armed extremist groups supported with funds and intelligence by some regional states.

“After the death of thousands of innocent people and the destruction of infrastructures in Syria, it has become clear, more than ever, that extremist thought has no place in the region,” Amir-Abdollahian said.

Hasson appreciated Iran’s assistance for Syrians against the conspiracies, adding that “Iran’s support is not for persons, but for Muslims to defend against their enemies’ plots.”
