The registration of clerical candidates for the election of the Assembly of Experts started nationwide on Thursday, while registration for the parliamentary polls is to open today.

Mohammad Hossein Moqimi, the head of Election Headquarters, said on Friday 86 Iranian clerics have registered for the assembly election, IRNA reported.

Moqimi noted that December 23 would be the deadline for all potential candidates planning to participate in the Assembly of Experts election.

Assembly of Experts is a clerical body tasked with supervising the Leader's performance and selecting a successor.

The election for the fifth Assembly of Experts with 88 seats will be held on February 26, at the same time as the elections for the Majlis with 290 seats.

Hojjatoleslam Seyyed Hassan Khomeini, 43, a grandson of the late founder of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, registered on Friday for the Assembly of Experts election.

Speaking to reporters after the registration, Khomeini said he is participating in the election as an independent candidate.

He said nothing should be more important in polls than promoting national unity, stressing that he looks forward to sound elections.

In one-third of the polling stations, for the first time, ballot boxes will be replaced by electronic voting machines, which would reduce the time required for announcing the results to a few hours from several days in the previous Majlis elections.
