Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said the Syrian crisis can only be resolved by adopting political solutions and respecting the Syrian people’s will. In a phone conversation with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura on Sunday, Amir-Abdollahian underscored the need for settling the Syrian crisis through political means and Syrian-Syrian talks between the government and opposition groups, Tasnim News Agency reported. The diplomat said Iran does not approve of a list of Syrian opposition groups prepared in a recent meeting in Saudi Arabia since such a move is in contravention of the declaration issued after the second round of Vienna talks on Syria. Vienna has hosted two rounds of multilateral talks over the past few months for finding a way out of the lingering crisis in Syria. De Mistura highlighted Iran’s influential role in resolving the conflict in the Arab country. The phone conversation came after over 100 members of opposition groups from inside and outside Syria took part in a meeting in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Dec. 9-10.
