A senior official at the Russian Ministry of Defense has said Tehran and Moscow share common security interests and are keen to expand cooperation in this regard.  Member of Russian Defense Ministry Public Council Igor Korotchenko told IRNA that Iran is a key player in the Middle East region and can take effective steps to help resolve major regional crises. Korotchenko said Iran’s peace efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan in the past helped improve stability in the two countries. Noting that Iran is currently helping regional states overcome the problems caused by terrorist groups, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria in particular, the Russian official said irresponsible acts of some Western governments, those taken by the United States in particular, have jeopardized the security of the Middle East.
