Iran, as a major victim of chemical weapons, is opposed to all weapons of mass destruction and seeks a world free of such weapons.

Ambassador to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Alireza Jahangiri made the statement while talking to reporters in The Hague, the Netherlands, Fars News Agency reported on Friday.

“Iran is against all weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons,” he said.

Jahangiri also voiced Iran’s concern over Israel’s possession of atomic warheads and said, “This [Israel’s nuclear arsenal] poses a threat to the global security.”

Iran has always stressed the urgent need for the abolition of WMDs, including chemical weapons, as it has been a victim of such weapons.

Tens of thousands of Iranians were killed and wounded by chemical weapons during the 1980-88 Iraq-imposed war on Iran. Around 100,000 Iranians are still living with the effects, which include long-term respiratory problems, eye and skin ailments and cancer, as well as immune system, psychological and genetic disorders.
