The secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation says it is the "absolute" and "unconditional" right of Iran to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

Nikolai Patrushev made the remarks in a meeting with Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani in Tehran on Tuesday.

The Russian security chief heading a high-ranking political, security, and economic delegation arrived in Tehran on Monday night for a two-day official visit.

"It is the absolute and unconditional right of Iran to enjoy nuclear energy for peaceful purposes; and the remaining issues regarding Iran's nuclear program should be resolved through political negotiations with the P5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members and Germany)," IRNA quoted him as saying.

The two officials discussed bilateral ties and a range of international and regional issues as well as the ways to counter common threats.

They also hailed the "friendly atmosphere" and "good understanding" between Tehran and Moscow.

The SNSC secretary highlighted similar views and principled policies of the two states on the battle against terrorism, rejecting unilateralism in dealing with international crises and underscoring the need for enhancing economic capacities in the region.

Shamkhani said expansion of Iran-Russia ties will be in the interests of the two countries and help promote the stability and security of the region.

Patrushev stressed the need to address security challenges in accordance with international law and called for holding regular consultations between the two states to reach a better understanding on priorities in bilateral cooperation.
