Iran says a recent resolution by the UN General Assembly’s Human Rights Committee against Iran and Russia over their involvement in Syria is a “gift” to terrorists and extremists.

The non-binding resolution is aimed at undermining the campaign against terrorism and extremism, and will only discredit the UN and its General Assembly, Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Gholamhossein Dehqani said on Friday, Press TV reported.

The resolution, authored by Saudi Arabia and co-sponsored by Qatar and other Arab countries as well as the US and other western powers, was adopted by the General Assembly’s Third Committee on Thursday.

The resolution calls for an immediate end to all attacks against what it describes as moderate Syrian opposition. It claims that such attacks benefit terrorist groups such as the so-called Islamic State.

Dehqani warned of the “adverse consequences” of the resolution on the UN reputation and said Iranian military forces are present in Syria upon an official request by the Syrian government to provide consultations to the war-hit country.
