Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian congratulated the Iraqi people on the completion of the political process to form a new Iraqi government.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports the Iraqi parliament’s decision which has been taken based on the country’s constitution,” IRNA quoted him as saying on Monday.

He also said Iran will fully support the new Iraqi government.

The time has come for the countries in the region to help the Iraqi government root out terrorism.

Iraq is engaged in a major military conflict with Islamic State (IS) militants who have seized large swathes land in the north of the Arab country.

In addition, Amir-Abdollahian said the Iraqi people and leaders proved that they do not allow the enemies of the region, the remnants of the regime of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, and takfiri terrorists to undermine the security of Iraq and the region.

A takfiri is a Muslim who accuses another Muslim of being an unbeliever.

The Iraqi parliament approved a new government headed by Haider al-Abadi as prime minister on Monday night, Reuters reported.

Abadi, a Shiite Islamist, included members of Iraq’s Shiite majority and its Kurdish and Sunni minorities in his cabinet as he started his uphill task to unify various Iraqi groups to help bring security and stability to the crisis-hit country.

President Hassan Rouhani also issued a message on Tuesday congratulating Abadi on his appointment as prime minister and expressed hope that bilateral relations would be expanded during his tenure.
