Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has outlined general policies on the environment, consistent with Article 110 of the constitution, in a letter to the heads of the three branches of government.

The letter underlines effective management of vital resources, adoption of tighter regulations on environment preservation, compilation of an atlas on the Iranian ecosystem, engagement with other countries to address common environmental challenges, development of a green economy and criminalization of environmental damage, IRNA reported.

The main environmental policies are as follows:

A consistent national system needs to be established to ensure that vital natural resources are managed efficiently.

The use of environmental pollutants must be banned and violators must be subject to prosecution.

Measures are to be taken to mitigate the effects of climate change and environmental problems such as deforestation, drought and dust storms.

A green economy must be created by promoting clean energy and organic products, safely handling waste and wastewater, improving patterns of energy, water and food consumption and improving manufacturing processes in economic sectors.

Measures such as tax rebate or other incentives should be introduced to encourage investment in green projects and application of environmentally-friendly technologies.

Efforts must be made to make common cause with other countries to form regional organizations aimed at combating dust storms and water pollution.
