German Chancellor Angela Merkel said successful negotiations by world powers over Iran’s nuclear program could provide a blueprint to start talks on ending the conflict in Syria.

Negotiators, who gathered on Friday in Vienna to discuss Syria, should look to the Iran talks that included the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council—the US, Britain, France, Russia and China plus Germany—as a way to move the talks forward, Merkel told reporters in China, according to Bloomberg.

The Iran format “has perhaps proven itself in the case of Syria, certainly not overnight, but at least to have made a start in talks,” Merkel said.
