Call for UN Structural Reforms

The Non-Aligned Movement underlined the need for structural reforms in the United Nations in conformity with the UN Charter.   Ambassador to the UN Hossein Dehqani delivered a speech at the Sixth Committee on behalf of the NAM in New York on Monday about the movement’s stance on the importance of strengthening the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and promoting multilateralism in the international body, according to Press TV.  He stressed the important role of the UN General Assembly and criticized the Security Council’s interference in issues which are related to the General Assembly.  Dehqani, whose country presides over NAM, also denounced the Security Council’s imposition of sanctions on countries, saying sanctions would be legitimate only in case the countries threaten international peace and security. He emphasized that the use of sanctions as a deterrent measure violates international principles and regulations.
