In a phone conversation on Monday, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov discussed the latest developments in Syria and “political ways” to defuse the crisis gripping the war-torn Arab country, IRNA reported. The two sides called for collective international efforts involving “main regional players” to help find a political solution to the lingering conflict, which has claimed the lives of about 250,000 people and displaced millions, triggering a refugee crisis affecting the whole region and Europe. Tehran and Moscow, the key allies of President Bashar al-Assad, have recently stepped up backing for the Syrian government in its campaign against militant groups. Russia started airstrikes against positions of insurgents operating in Syria on Sept. 30 and Iran has increased its military advisors on the ground.
