An unnamed Pakistani security official claimed that Iranian border guards fired eight mortar shells into Pakistan’s restive Balochistan Province on Saturday.

The firing incident occurred early morning when mortar shells landed in a border village of Panjgur district, the Economic Times reported.

“Security forces were dispatched to the areas where the mortar fell. No loss occurred,” the official said.

Iranians occasionally fire across the border to foil bids by smugglers to cross the border or efforts by militants to sneak into Iran’s volatile border regions, the newspaper quoted authorities as saying.

Iran and Pakistan share a 900-km-long border, which is often used by criminal gangs to smuggle Iranian petrol and diesel into Pakistan and by traffickers to take migrants and illicit drugs to Europe through Iran.
